Correlation between uteroplacental three‐dimensional power Doppler indices and true uterine blood flow: evaluation in a pregnant sheep model

Abstract: Objectives Three-dimensional (3D) Doppler quantification within the uteroplacental unit could be of great help in understanding and (Virtual Organ Computer-aided AnaLysis) software. The correlation between true blood flow and Doppler indices (vascularization index (VI), flow index (FI) and vascularization flow index (VFI)) was evaluated, together with measurement reproducibility. Results Forty-eight acquisitions were analyzed. All 3D Doppler indices were significantly correlated with true blood flow. Higher co… Show more

“…In these fetuses, there were more cases suggesting hemodynamic redistribution than expected by conventional Doppler studies. Morel et al have conducted an in vivo study confirming a significant correlation between true blood perfusion and quantitative 3D Doppler indices measured within the uteroplacental unit in sheep [53].…”

“…Quantification of 3-D-PD signals in a determined region of interest is performed with three indices: vascularization index (VI) 5 ratio of color voxels to all voxels in a given volume, flow index (FI) 5 the average color intensity of all red voxels in the analyzed volume and vascularization flow index (VFI) 5 a combination of the two, which is calculated as (VI 3 FI)/ 100. Besides the theoretical potential, a correlation between these indices and true perfusion has been found in both in vitro and ex vivo models (Jones et al 2009(Jones et al , 2010Morel et al 2010;Raine-Fenning et al 2008a). Despite the great scientific interest in these indices, as evidenced by the more than 200 articles published in the field of obstetrics and gynecology alone (Alcazar 2008;Martins 2010;Martins et al 2007, their use has generally not been considered in clinical practice because of their serious limitations Nandi et al 2014;Nastri et al 2013).…”

“…La corrélation entre ces indices et le flux réel de perfusion placentaire a été évaluée par notre groupe sur modèle de brebis : une plus haute corrélation a été observée pour les VI et VFI en comparaison avec le FI (VI : r = 0,81, p < 0,0001 ; VFI : r = 0,75, p < 0,0001 ; FI : r = 0,53, p < 0,0001) [15]. Les VI et VFI étaient par contre plus influencés que le FI par la profondeur du tissu d'intérêt.…”
