Working Excessively and Burnout Among Nurses in the Context of Sick Leaves

Introduction: Nurses are particularly at risk of being affected by professional burnout because of the unique patient-caregiver relationship, which requires strong emotional involvement. Aim: In this study, we decided to examine the mutual correlations of working excessively and burnout-two basic occurrences affecting the mental well-being of employees-and their relationship with sick leave. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted among 460 nurses working in 3 hospitals in Poland. The polish version of Maslach Burnout Inventory and the Working Excessively Questionnaire developed by Paluchowski were used to conduct the survey. All the demographic data and data on sick leaves were obtained from surveys in the form of respondents' self-reports. Results: The constructed regression model shows that the tendency to work excessively, as assessed by loss of control over work (LCW), perfectionist work style (PWS), and perceived oppressiveness of the organization (OOP) measures, explains 12.4% of the variation in burnout levels. This confirms that overburden with work can be a factor contributing to the increase in burnout measures. The constructed logistic regression model showed that increase in the level of occupational burnout by 1 point, the chance of nurse having at least three sick leaves per year increases 1.029 times (i.e., by about 2.9%). None of working excessively measures affected the frequency of sick leaves. Conclusion: (1) Excessive workload increases burnout symptoms, which in turn encourages nurses to take sick leave more frequently. (2) The tendency for nurses to overburden themselves with work may be seen by hospital managers as a positive phenomenon, but, based on this study, it is clear that this can only be done in the short term, whereas in the long term it will be clearly detrimental to the organization of hospitals and the quality of care.

Introduction: Burnout syndrome is one of the consequences and the results of occupational or job stress emerged in the form of emotional exhaustion feeling, depersonalization and decrement personal accomplishment. The aim of this study was to determine the occupational stress and its relationship with burnout syndrome in the academic members of Lorestan University of Medical Sciences. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted on 111 of the faculty members via multistage sampling. Data were collected by the questionnaire of Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), and Osipow Occupational Stress Inventory (OSI- R). Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics as well as analytical statistics such as chi square, Kruskal-Wallis, Mann Whitney tests and Pearson correlation coefficient. Results: The results showed that the most of the participants had a low level of burnout three dimensions including emotional burnout (72.1%), depersonalization (81.1%), and the decrement of personal accomplishment (56.8%). Moreover 79.3% of samples had a low occupational stress, but there was a meaningful relationship between occupational stress and dimensions of burnout syndrome with an exception for the intensity of decrement of personal accomplishment. Conclusion: Academic members were in an appropriate condition concerning burnout syndrome and occupational stress. However by applying some strategies to decrease stress and determining stress resources, we can improve their psychological health of academic members.

ResumoEsta pesquisa de levantamento objetivou investigar a prevalência da síndrome de Burnout nos profi ssionais de enfermagem de um hospital e de Unidades Básicas de Saúde, comparando-a entre as três categorias profi ssionais (enfermeiros, técnicos e auxiliares de enfermagem) e os tipos de serviços, e identifi cou seus fatores sociodemográfi cos e ocupacionais preditores. A amostra foi composta por 116 profi ssionais, entre 21 e 60 anos (M = 37,26 anos; DP = 8,56), de ambos os gêneros, de um município de médio porte de Minas Gerais, que responderam ao Inventário de Burnout de Maslach e a um Questionário Sociodemográfi co e Ocupacional. Observou-se uma alta prevalência da síndrome (47%), e um grande número de trabalhadores em risco de adoecimento (entre 41% a 49% da amostra, dependendo da dimensão do Burnout). Não houve diferenças signifi cativas em função das categorias profi ssionais e locais de trabalho. As variáveis ocupacionais "problemas de relacionamento com colegas de trabalho" (OR = 3) e "insatisfação com o trabalho" (OR = 11) foram as preditoras da síndrome (p < 0,05). As variáveis sociodemográfi cas não foram signifi cativas. Este estudo contribui para a discussão sobre o processo de desenvolvimento do Burnout em profi ssionais de enfermagem, ajudando a planejar medidas preventivas de doenças ocupacionais e programas de intervenção nos serviços de saúde. AbstractThis survey research aimed to investigate the prevalence of the Burnout syndrome in nursing professionals of a hospital and Basic Health Units, comparing it among the three professional categories (nurses, nursing technicians and nursing assistants) and types of services, and to identify socio--demographic and occupational factors associated with its occurrence. The sample was composed of 116 professionals, between 21 and 60 years old (M = 37.26 years; SD = 8.56), of both genders, from a medium-sized city of Minas Gerais, who fulfi ll the Maslach Burnout Inventory and the socio--demographic and occupational questionnaire. There was a high prevalence of the syndrome (47%) and a large number of workers at risk of illness (between 41% and 49% of the sample according to the dimension of Burnout). There were no signifi cant differences between the professional categories and workplaces. The occupational variables "relationship problems with co-workers" (OR = 3) and "non--satisfaction with the job" (OR = 11) were the syndrome predictors (p < .05). The socio-demographic variables were not signifi cant. This study contributes to the discussion about Burnout developing process among nursing professionals, helping to plan preventive measures of occupational diseases and intervention programs in health services.
