Correlation of Clinical, Histological, and Cytokeratin Profiles of Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Oral Tongue With Prognosis

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to clinically, morphologically, and immunohistochemically correlate the expression of cytokeratins (CKs) 7, 10, 13, 14, 16, and 19 in 30 cases of tongue squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with disease outcome, metastases, clinical stage (tumor, node, metastasis [TNM]), and histological grade of malignancy proposed by Bryne. Statistical analysis (chi2 test) showed that only histological grading was not significantly correlated with the clinical variables. CK expression varied in the … Show more

“…[12] Histological diagnosis plays an important role in the management of oral cancers and histological grade is one of the prognostic factors. This has for many decades played a central role in the determination of malignancy, the classification of neoplasms, the grading and staging of tumors and management of disease.…”

“…Tumors with a final score ≤ 8 were classified as low-grade malignancy and tumors with a final score ≥ 9 were classified as high-grade malignancy. 19 Immunohistochemistry Three-µm-thick sections were obtained from paraffin-embedded tissue blocks and mounted on glass slides prepared with organosilane adhesive. The tissue sections were deparaffinized, rehydrated, and subjected to antigen retrieval with citrate buffer, pH 6.0, at 90ºC in a steamer for 60 min.…”
