Correlation of s-IgA and IL-6 Salivary with Caries Disease and Oral Hygiene Parameters in Children

Abstract: This study evaluates salivary immunoglobulin A (s-IgA) and interleukin 6 (IL-6) in saliva of children and its correlation to tooth decay severity. Fifty-nine patients were divided into two groups: caries free (A group) and caries active (B group). B group was investigated according to Mount and Monse indices. Mean salivary IgA rate between two groups (A 16.7 ± 4.5 mg/dL vs. B 21.8 ± 12.9 mg/dL) was not significant, while IL-6 rate (A 19.02 ± 5.3 pg/mL vs. B 30.2 ± 11.8 pg/mL) was statistically different. “…Bartold and Haynes reported higher IL-6 levels in inflamed gingival tissues compared to healthy control tissues [28]. Lo Giudice et al reported that a high level of IL-6 is present when caries is in an active state and associated to infectious consequences [6].…”

“…The correlation between oral hygiene, gingival inflammation, and inflammatory response has been largely described [ 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ]. Optimal values of performance hygiene index are significantly related to absence of gingival pathology and caries [ 6 ].…”

“…In these cases, clinicians may be forced to reach a presumptive diagnosis and make treatment decisions during the interventions [ 17 ]. Lo Giudice et al affirmed that the diagnostic phase could be improved by measuring IL-6 in saliva because the levels were significantly higher in children with active caries than in children without caries [ 18 ]. New instruments such as intraoral scanners and CAD-CAM technologies have improved the clinical phase of treatment, such as through the intraoperative performance of a crown or inlay [ 19 ].…”

“…Motivational apps, for example, may inspire patients to approach oral home-care measures in ways unreached to date. In dentistry, periodontitis, gingivitis and caries are the most frequent bacteria-based diseases [ 12 ], in the case of caries, a correlation between salivary inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin (IL-6) were found [ 13 ]. Both are preventable and, in the case of gingivitis, reversible, through proper home care.…”
