Correlation of serological markers and thrombocytopenia in early diagnosis of dengue infection

Abstract: Background: Dengue is an acute viral infection with fatal complications. To reduce the disease burden, early and specific diagnosis of dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome with supportive therapy reduces morbidity and mortality. This study was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of NS1 antigen and platelet count. Methods: A total of 200 serum samples were collected from clinically suspected cases of dengue fever. Serum samples were tested for NS1, IgM and IgG and correlated with the platelet count.… Show more

“…Dengue specific IgM can be detected in blood only after 3 to 5 days of illness; hence it cannot be used as an early diagnostic marker. 19 Many studies conducted in various hospital have obtained a wide range of sensitivity (48.5 to 98.7%) and specificity (71.42 to 100%) of ICT based RDTs compared with ELISA, similarly in the our study, we found a sensitivity and specificity of 98 % and 74% respectively for NS1 antigen detection and 76% and 90% respectively for IgM Antibody detection. As our study indicates that NS1 antigen is highly sensitive, it is an effective tool for early dengue infection.…”

“…Thrombocytopenia is a common clinical condition found in dengue and a predictive biomarker for the severity of dengue [8,9,15]. More than 80% of the total patients had thrombocytopenia in this study and all 09 leaking patients on the admission day had suffered from severe thrombocytopenia.…”

“…Although other dengue confirmatory tests require a well-equipped laboratory, rapid NS1 test can be performed in a hospital with lack of laboratory facility. Apart from the dengue specific parameters, platelet count is a prognostic laboratory parameter which is available to identify severity of dengue, even though thrombocytopenia is not an early indicator of severe dengue, but it helps in predicting the progression of disease [8, 9].…”
