Correlation of the base of the Serpukhovian Stage (Mississippian) in NW Europe

Abstract: Europe, this may be as a result of collection failure. The base of the Serpukhovian based on the FAD of Lochriea ziegleri will be in the middle of the Brigantian regional Sub-stage, a horizon substantially older than the base of the Namurian Regional Stage.

“…= Serpukhovian; TER = Terwagne Formation; THO = Thon-Samson Member. The base of the Serpukhovian Global Stage has not yet been ratified but will probably be chosen to coincide with the first appearance datum (FAD) of the conodont Lochriea ziegleri (Sevastopulo & Barham, 2014). Lochriea ziegleri has not been reported from the Namur-Dinant Basin; however, the boundary can be tentatively correlated to a level within the uppermost Lower Member of the Anhée Formation using foraminifera (Conil et al, 1991;Poty et al, 2006) and ammonoids (Pirlet, 1968;Paproth et al, 1983) in conjunction with the correlations between the FAD of Lochriea ziegleri and NW European ammonoid / foraminifera biozones suggested by Barham et al (2015).…”

“…The base of the Actinopteria Shale in its wider sense ('Actinopteria Shale interval') coincides with the conventional mid-Brigantian boundary. New biostratigraphic data indicate that this biostratigraphic level might be close to the still unsettled base of the Serpukhovian (Sevastopulo & Barham, 2014;Cózar & Somerville, 2014. The LST of sequence 11 is not recognized.…”
