Correlations between Anomalies of the Dentition and Pathologies of the Locomotor System?a Literature Review

Abstract: From anatomic and functional aspects the stomatognathic system and the upper cervical spine are closely interlinked. Together with complex neuromuscular relationships, this gives rise to an important field of cooperation between orthodontics and orthopedics. The literature appeals for close interdisciplinary cooperation for patients with syndromes and for those with torticollis and scoliosis. Since orthopedic points of contact are obvious in these special cases, orthopedic aspects are now being taken increasin… Show more

“…As described in literature, the authors are not aware of an objective and reproducible examination method for the documentation of body posture [1,3]. Lateral thoracic and pelvic X-rays could have been used for the analysis of posture, but would have involved radiation exposure for the patients.…”

“…Orthodontic literature contains descriptions of correlations between the craniofacial morphology and the body posture [1][2][3]. In our own recent studies, we used lateral cephalometric radiographs to analyze the craniofacial morphology and the jaw position in relation to the skeletal growth pattern in adults and found correlations to selected body posture parameters analyzed by means of video rasterstereography [4].…”

“…Posterior cross-bite was recorded when at least one maxillary molar occluded palatally to the opposing mandibular molar (11). Furthermore, coincidence of dental midlines with the facial midline as well as the presence of oral habits were recorded (12,13). None of the subjects received any orthodontic treatment.…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5][6][7] Korbmacher et al 4 summarized these findings in a systematic review. In a study series, the cephalometric assessment of lateral radiographs is used to define the relationship between the head posture and a Research Scientist, Department of Orthodontics, University of Mü nster, Mü nster, Germany.…”
