“…Eicosanoid pathways, either through COX or LOX, add molecular oxygen that generates reactive oxygen species [39,40]. Depletion of the scavenging capacity of antioxidant defense systems is hazardous to cells and leads to oxidative damage.…”

“…Finally, in view of confusing data, a recent robust study by Fujimoto et al evaluated the relevance of a vast panel of antioxidant enzyme activities and specific lipid peroxidation end products by correlational analyses with early embryo morphology parameters, embryo fragmentation, and embryo cell number, using a 1 follicle—1 oocyte/embryo design, analogous to our study [39]. Although the authors did not find correlations between lipid peroxidation derivatives or antioxidant enzyme activities and embryo quality, post hoc power analysis indicated possible undetected associations between the embryo fragmentation score and 13-hydroxy octadecatrienoic acid (13-HOTE) and 13-hydroperoxy octadecadieneoic acid (13-HPODE).…”

“…Reactive species are commonly generated as part of normal cellular metabolism or as a consequence of exposure to exogenous toxic molecules or stressful processes [12]. In addition to their destructive actions, these species play important roles as second messengers in cellular functions through the activation of cell signaling cascades, such as those involving mitogen-activated protein kinases and regulation of transcription factors [13].…”

“…Investigators have characterized endogenous human FF constituents including hormones, proteins, reactive oxygen species, amino acids and sugars, as well as dissolved O 2 (5). Several groups described concentrations of HDL-particle associated lipids, proteins, micronutrients and enzyme activities in the human ovarian follicle (3, 4, 610). Interest in the use of FF as a source of biomarkers predictive of IVF outcomes has gained tremendous momentum, although with limited success to date (5, 11).…”
