Correlations of lean body mass with nutritional indicators and mortality in patients on peritoneal dialysis

Abstract: Detection of malnutrition in dialysis patients is important since this is a predictor of morbidity and mortality. Lean body mass (LBM) reflects the somatic protein store and this was measured by creatinine kinetics, anthropometry, and biometric impedance in 210 incident Chinese patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. The study was started in the third month of dialysis and the patients were followed for an average of 29 months. We devised three models of survival by combining the three different… Show more

“…Lean body mass by the creatinine kinetics method was used to determine muscle protein stores (12,13). A dynamometer was used to evaluate hand-grip strength in both the dominant and the nondominant arm; the measurement was repeated 3 times, and the highest value achieved was recorded in newtons.…”

“…Weekly total, peritoneal, and renal Kt/V urea; weekly total, peritoneal, and renal creatinine clearance; and residual renal function were calculated using standard methods. Lean body mass (LBM) by creatinine kinetics method was used to reflect muscle protein stores (24,25) and also normalized by the square of height. Total sodium removal was the sum of urinary and dialysate sodium removal (26).…”

“…Since recent investigations have documented a powerful association between muscle wasting and mortality in patients with CKD [7][8][9] , AMA might be an important predictor of the prognosis of hemodialysis patients. A decrease in the AMA of hemodialysis patients, compared with that in normal controls, has been reported [10,11] .…”
