“…The available literature suggests that the most convincing evidence for the Law obtains when one compares a very low ability group (say, below an IQ of 78) with groups immediately above that range. This is certainly consistent with the findings of Detterman & Daniel (1989) 4 . The Low ability subjects in the first study, although at the lower levels with respect to their scores on DAT, did not in fact belong to the "IQ below 78" group.…”

“…This happens because there is no scope for them to exercise their superior capacity and, consequently, the tasks fail to provide a true ranking of those individuals who find the task within their capabilities. Stankov (1993) suggested that many current psychometric tests, including those used by Detterman and Daniel (1989), are of this nature. The Law will hold under these conditions.…”

“…Second, most of the research participants were from the higher end of the distribution of cognitive ability, and there is evidence that relations among cognitive variables vary as a function of level of ability (e.g., Detterman & Daniel, 1989). It would therefore be valuable to extend these types of analyses to a more diverse sample with a larger proportion of individuals from the lower regions of the ability distribution.…”

“…Although it is not the main objective of this study to answer questions concerning what are the potential factors that might modulate the strength of the senses-intelligence link proposed by Galton, the effects of two additional variables were examined. Given that some studies have shown that aging might strengthen the sensory-cognitive link (e.g., Lindenberger & Baltes, 1994;Salthouse et al, 1996) and that other studies (e.g., Deary, Egan, Gibson, Austin, Brand, & Kellaghan, 1996;Detterman & Daniel, 1989;Legree, Pifer, & Grafton, 1996) have reported findings supporting Spearman's dedifferentiation hypothesis (i.e., ability structure tends to be more correlated at the low ability level), we further analyzed the links between g and the sensory measures with respect to age and ability level. With respect to age, the participants were separated into a younger subsample (30 to 40 years old) and an older subsample (41 to 51 years old).…”
