Correlations of Scores on the Nelson-Denny Reading Test, Form E, and Measures of Academic Aptitude, Academic Achievement, Readers' Attitude, and Students' Self-Concept

Abstract: Correlations between the Nelson-Denny Reading Test, Form E and ACT composite scores are similar to those reported in the manual which supports the test author's suggestion that the Nelson-Denny can be used to predict academic success. A low correlation was found between self-reported GPA and scores on the reading test, Form E and between Nelson-Denny scores, Form E and attitudes toward reading but none with students' self-concepts.

“…The Nelson-Denny is a validated, timed test of reading comprehension and speed. It has been shown to be reliable and a good predictor of a variety of measures of academic success (Hawes, 1982;Wood, 1982;Zimmer, Glover, Ronning, & Petersen, 1979). The possible range of comprehension scores is 0-36, and the range of the reading rate measure is 7-633.…”

“…The vocabulary section has been used in similar research (Ozuru et al, 2009) and has high Cronbach's alpha scores of internal reliability (a =.90). Additionally, the test has been shown to be a good predictor of academic success (Hawes, 1982;Wood, 1982;Collins & Onwuegbuzie, 2002). Scores of reading ability were based on the total number of correct responses.…”

“…Se ha demostrado que predice acertadamente diversas medidas de rendimiento académico (Hawes, 1982;Wood, 1982;Zimmer, Glover, Ronning, y Petersen, 1979). Esta prueba tenía limitación de tiempo, pero a los sujetos se les permitió trabajar a su propio ritmo para todo lo posterior de esta investigación.…”
