Silane sol-gel coatings have been widely studied as a potential strategy to protect aluminium and aluminium alloys components and were proved to be suitable both as a chemical conversion treatment alone and as a coupling agent between the underling substrate and an organic coating. Compared with many aluminium alloys, only little investigation was carried out on the application of sol-gel coatings on AA1XXX. Despite pure aluminium shows lower mechanical resistance with respect to aluminium alloys, however, the high thermal conductivity makes it suitable in a huge variety of applications, such as heat exchanger constructions as well as cooling systems. The present work is devoted to the study of the effect of the surface chemical pretreatment on the structural and corrosion protection properties of a hybrid sol-gel film. Different surface chemical treatments of the 1050 aluminium alloy prior sol-gel deposition were tested: alkaline etch, acidic passivation and boiling water immersion (to promote the formation of pseudo-boehmite). Films of 1 :1 molar ratio of GLYMO : MTES were obtained on AA1050 from a 5wt% solution in acidified water. The effect of the chemical surface treatment on the AA1050 substrate was investigated both in terms of morphology by means of scanning electron microscopy and in terms of surface chemistry by means of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) exploiting attenuated total reflectance (ATR) geometry. The structure and the chemical properties of the different coatings were investigated by means of FT-IR. The characterization of the different protective coatings was carried out by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements and potentiodynamic curves.

RESUMOPré-tratamentos a base de Cr(VI), têm sido usados há muito tempo em diversos materiais, como eletrodepósitos e ligas de zinco; entretanto, por serem tóxicos para o homem e ao meio ambiente, estão sendo definitivamente banidos, segundo diretrizes européias [2000/53/EC]. Nesse contexto, novas tecnologias alternativas têm sido estudadas e desenvolvidas. A deposição de filmes finos contendo silanos surge como uma dessas alternativas para aumentar a resistência à corrosão dos eletrodepósitos de zinco sobre aço. Nesse artigo, filmes contendo o silano γ-UPS (ureidopropiltrietoxissilano) foram aplicados sobre as ligas ZnFe e ZnCo eletrodepositadas. Os diferentes sistemas silano/substratos obtidos, foram então avaliados através de Espectroscopia de Impedância Eletroquímica (EIE), em solução de NaCl 0,1M a fim de verificar as características eletroquímicas dos mesmos. A Espectroscopia Fotoelétrica de Emissão de Raios-X (XPS) foi utilizada para quantificar o silício (Si) existente nos filmes. Os resultados indicam que os sistemas estudados dependem do tipo de substrato metálico. O sistema UPS/ZnFe mostrou maior eficiência por barreira contra corrosão e a resposta eletroquímica de seu comportamento frente à corrosão, foi investigada de forma temporal. Os dados obtidos por EIE foram modelados através de um circuito elétrico equivalente, permitindo a obtenção dos parâmetros eletroquímicos. In this context, new alternative technologies have been studied and developed. The deposition of thin films containing silanes appears as one of these alternatives to increase the corrosion resistance of zinc alloys. In this article, films containing the γ-UPS silane (ureidopropyltrietoxysilane) were applied on these substrates with zinc. The different systems silane/substrates were then evaluated by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) in 0,1M NaCl solution to verify the electrochemical characteristics of them. Photoelectric Emission Spectroscopy of X-rays (XPS) was used to quantify the silicon (Si) existent in the films. The results indicate that the systems studied depend on the metallic substrate. The UPS / ZnFe showed higher efficiency for barrier against corrosion. Data obtained from EIS were modeled by an equivalent electric circuit, allowing the determination of electrochemical parameters.

The present work aims at evaluating the corrosion resistance of 316L stainless steel pretreated with an organic-inorganic silane hybrid coating. The latter was prepared via a sol-gel process using 3-glycidoxypropyl-trimethoxysilane as a precursor and bisphenol A as a crosslinking agent. The corrosion resistance of the pre-treated substrates was evaluated by neutral salt spray tests, linear sweep voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques during immersion in a 3.5 % NaCl solution. In addition, the effect of the drying method as an effective parameter on the microscopic features of the hybrid coatings was studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy.Results show that the silane hybrid coatings provide a good coverage and an additional corrosion protection of the 316L substrate.
