Corticofugal modulation of peripheral auditory responses

Abstract: The auditory efferent system originates in the auditory cortex and projects to the medial geniculate body (MGB), inferior colliculus (IC), cochlear nucleus (CN) and superior olivary complex (SOC) reaching the cochlea through olivocochlear (OC) fibers. This unique neuronal network is organized in several afferent-efferent feedback loops including: the (i) colliculo-thalamic-cortico-collicular; (ii) cortico-(collicular)-OC; and (iii) cortico-(collicular)-CN pathways. Recent experiments demonstrate that blocking … Show more

“…The acoustic overexposure stimulus was an octave band of noise (8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16) presented at 100 dB SPL for 2 hrs. During exposures, animals were awake and unrestrained within a 12 x 16 x 16 cm, acoustically transparent cage.…”

“…The auditory system features a massive set of centrifugal efferent projections that innervate a wide range of peripheral and central targets. Efferent olivocochlear and middle ear reflex pathways have a well-established role in rapid gain adjustment to protect the inner ear from injury and normalize activity levels in the auditory nerve 1,16 . A separate set of efferent centrifugal projections originate in the auditory cortex (ACtx) and innervate nearly all levels of subcortical auditory processing, including the thalamus, inferior colliculus (IC), superior olivary complex, and cochlear nucleus [17][18][19] .…”

“…Along the ascending auditory pathway these nuclei perform several fundamental computations relevant for sound processing (Romand & Ehret, 1997). However, an abundance of descending pathways exist in the auditory system involving brainstem and even cochlear structures, with a still weakly understood functional role (Terreros & Delano, 2015). With most of the findings stemming from animal research (for reviews, see Huffman & Henson, 1990;Suga & Ma, 2003;Terreros & Delano, 2015), the availability of tools to study neural activity along subcortical auditory regions in healthy human participants would be of outstanding value in broadening our understanding of their functional roles in normal and disordered hearing.…”

“…relevant sound frequencies across the lifespan 25,26 . Furthermore, the profound auditory cortical modulation of subcortical sound processing 25,27,28 suggests that auditory system plasticity interacts at multiple levels to serve high-order functions beyond simple feature coding of acoustic frequency.…”
