Abstract-Twelve years ago a group of practitioners and researchers came together to try to solve problems relating specifically to Global Software Engineering (GSE) practice. This paper aims to assess whether the many hundreds of GSE research papers written over this period have had an impact on practice. We conducted semi-structured interviews with senior managers and project managers from ten companies, four of which are large multinationals (three in Fortune 100); four are medium sized enterprises, and two are small startups. GSE research is perceived as useful by industry with all participants stating that studying the subject would improve GSE performance; but all were unanimous in saying they did not read articles on GSE. Practitioners go to books, blogs, colleagues, forums, experience reports of 1-2 pages in length, or depend on their own experience to solve problems in GSE. Controversially, many didn't see GSE as separate from general project management. Practitioners don't want frameworks; they want patterns of context specific help. While dissemination techniques need to be improved, that is not sufficient. Experience-based advice is just as important.

Abstract-Nowadays, software systems are a key factor in the success of many organizations as in most cases they play a central role helping them attain a competitive advantage. However, despite their importance, software systems may be quite costly to develop, so substantially decreasing companies' profits. In order to tackle this challenge, many organizations look for ways to decrease costs and increase profits by applying new software development approaches, like Global Software Development (GSD). Some aspects of the software project like communication, cooperation and coordination are more challenging in globally distributed than in co-located projects, since language, cultural and time zone differences are factors which can increase the required effort to globally perform a software project. Communication, coordination and cooperation aspects affect directly the effort estimation of a project, which is one of the critical tasks related to the management of a software development project. There are many studies related to effort estimation methods/techniques for co-located projects. However, there are evidences that the co-located approaches do not fit to GSD. So, this paper presents the results of a systematic literature review of effort estimation in the context of GSD, which aimed at help both researchers and practitioners to have a holistic view about the current state of the art regarding effort estimation in the context of GSD. The results suggest that there is room to improve the current state of the art on effort estimation in GSD.

this paper investigates the applicability of Use Case Point estimation model to global software project development. Nowadays, there is growing trend among leading software companies to outsource their project geographically, in countries with lower labor rate. This new trend increases competitiveness in the software market, which in turn shortens the development lifecycle time. This leads to several challenges in project management, especially global project management. Effort and cost estimation are two of these significant challenges. The present paper analyzes the potential of Use Case Point estimation model for global projects and uses this as a basis to discuss three proposed factors (Global team trust, Global team composition and Culture value) that will help in managing the global software project development.
