The cultivation of pearl millet in India is experiencing important transformations due to changes in weather, socio-economic trends, and technological progress. In this scope, we propose a new characterization of the pearl millet production environment in India using the latest available data and methodology. For that, we constructed a database incorporating data on various aspects of pearl millet cultivation at the district level from 1998 to 2017. We complemented this analysis using extensive pearl millet agri-system simulations to evaluate crop models' abilities to reconstruct and analyse the system at an unprecedented scale. We also proposed a new method to infer system parameters from crop model data. Our results show important differences compared to the characterization currently used. The East part of the pearl millet tract (East Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh) emerges as the only region where pearl millet cultivation has grown with potential surplus that is likely exported. Important reductions of pearl millet cultivated area in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka are potentially due to economy-driven transition to other more pro table crops like cotton, maize, or castor bean. The data used also point toward a constant increase of the rain during the growing season which could have major consequences on the future of this crop, with potential positive effects like extra yield but also negative like extra pressure due to more intense and erratic rainfall or transition to more pro table crops requiring more water. Despite difficulties to predict pearl millet yield in rapidly changing environments, the tested crop models reflected reasonably well the pearl millet production system, thus, setting the base for effective system design in future climatic scenarios. Our data and results have been gathered in an open-source interactive online application.

Cotton is a prominent cash crop cultivated for fiber, edible oil and oil cake. A global environmental issue, like climate change, alters weather parameters necessary for the healthy growth and development of cotton plants, affecting fiber quality and economic yield. The study aims to illustrate the evidence of climate change in Maharashtra and assess its impact on the production of cotton in this region. The study was conducted in the state of Maharashtra, India. Geographic information system (GIS)-based models were created based on the vector data (geopolitical boundaries of the state of Maharashtra and its districts) and the corresponding raster attributes (meteorological data) to examine the changes in the patterns of distribution of temperature, rainfall and severity of drought (Standardized Precipitation Index-SPI) over the study period (1990 to 2015). Further, a statistical multiple linear regression model was developed using district-wise data on yield and climatic parameters obtained from International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) to estimate the relationship between the dependent variable (yield of cotton) and the independent variables (annual rainfall and annual mean temperature). GIS modeling and mapping provide evidence of changes in the spatial distribution of rainfall and temperature. Although the regression analysis seems weak, it is acceptable for natural systems because natural systems are complex and often highly variable, making it difficult to create a perfect model. The multiple linear regression model shows that such changes in climatic parameters have a significant negative impact on the economic yield of cotton.

Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum ssp.) belongs to the genus Gossypium from the family Malvaceae. About 100 genera are in the family Malvaceae and about 1500 species. It is grown worldwide for oil, seed, and fiber. A major problem in cotton cultivation is a drought that’s why this experiment was planned to evaluate the cotton mutants for drought tolerance. A variety of cotton Cyto-155 was mutated with gamma rays at different intensities such that 20kR, 25kR, 30kR, and 35kR, to obtain some genetic variation. Mutated seed along with non-mutated of that cotton variety was sown in split plot layout under randomized complete block design with three replications, under the normal irrigated condition with six irrigations and water stress condition with two irrigations at maturity data was collected for plant height, number of monopodial branches, number of sympodial branches, bolls per plant, boll weight, seed index, GOT%, lint index, seed cotton yield, relative water content and excised leaf water loss.Results showed a highly significant effect of genotype and water regime on all observed traits. Water regime × genotype interaction was also highly significant for plant height, number of sympodial branches, seed index, boll weight, lint index, and excised leaf water loss. Water regime × genotype interaction was non-significant for number of monopodial branches, bolls per plant, GOT%, seed cotton yield, and relative water content. Mean comparison indicated that seed mutated at 30kR and 35kR performed well for all yield-related traits in both irrigated conditions.
