Cough Sound Detection and Diagnosis Using Artificial Intelligence Techniques: Challenges and Opportunities

Abstract: Coughing is a common symptom of several respiratory diseases. The sound and type of cough are useful features to consider when diagnosing a disease. Respiratory infections pose a significant risk to human lives worldwide as well as a significant economic downturn, particularly in countries with limited therapeutic resources. In this study we reviewed the latest proposed technologies that were used to control the impact of respiratory diseases. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a promising technology that aids in… Show more

“…Malfunction associated with COVID-19 cases can be discovered from these patterns of the patient breath. Recently, the research of COVID-19 diagnosis algorithms based on cough and breath signals has got more attention (Bagad et al 2020 ; Rasheed et al 2020 ; Alqudaihi et al 2021 ; Pal and Sankarasubbu 2021 ). Therefore, using ML and DL algorithms to detect and screen COVID-19 cases from cough and breath samples has revealed encouraging outcomes (Belkacem et al 2021 ; Verde et al 2021 ; Pahar et al 2021 ; Deshpande et al 2022 ).…”

“…Besides these technical developments, researchers are emphasizing the need for research in COVID19-induced brain dysfunction (CIBD) to improve the mental health of large populations of infected/uninfected individuals [288]. Despite these highlighted areas and developments, AI's role in COVID-19 and post COVID-19 era can offer a proven method to further strengthen the impact of healthcare services/applications on population health, which is more necessary than ever in the post-COVID era [289][290][291][292]. To this end, further developments are needed to lower the effects of this pandemic and to serve mankind effectively in these unanticipated and challenging times.…”
