“…Publications have also been widely studied from a strategic evaluative perspective to identify and measure the productivity of laboratories, disciplines and countries (Arvanitis and Gaillard, 1992;Glänzel, 1996;Waast, 1996). The publication system in the social sciences, as in all sciences, is thus a global power structure (Alatas, 2003;Keim, 2008Keim, , 2011, which is very unequally distributed worldwide (Gingras and Mosbah-Natanson, 2010) and linguistically (Ammon, 2010). “…Alvin Gouldner's (1970) challenge to the restrictive and narrow orthodoxy of sociology lies alongside the feminist critiques of the same period. These debates have taken on a new intensity in the past decade, as claims for a more reflexive, and culturally appropriate sociology have begun to be heard from the sociologists of marginalised nations (Akiwowo 1999;Alatas 2001Alatas , 2006aAlatas , 2006bConnell 2007;Keim 2011). In this study, we have seen certain commonalities in the sociology of health and medicine across the three countries.…”

“…From a sociology of knowledge perspective, such debates have brought into focus the European, British and North Atlantic domination of sociological knowledge and its consequences for other countries, particularly the postcolonial nations of Africa, Singapore and Australia. These debates have subsequently encouraged further study into the 'Southern' sociologies of the periphery (Akiwowo 1999;Alatas 2006b;Connell 2007;Keim 2011).…”

“…Le concept de « courant contre-hégémonique » proposé par Keim (2008Keim ( , 2010 suggère un changement de perspective pour focaliser davantage des développements particuliers dans les sciences sociales du Sud, dont, nous semble-t-il, l'importance n'a pas été entièrement reconnue jusqu'à présent. Le concept est basé sur l'idée que la domination nord-atlantique dans les sciences sociales repose sur l'acceptation partagée d'une arène de compétition commune 33 .…”
