COVID-19, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases: Should we change the therapy?

Abstract: The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread all around the world in a very short period of time. Recent data are showing significant prevalence of arterial hypertension and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) among patients with COVID-19, which raised many questions about higher susceptibility of patients with these comorbidities to the novel coronavirus, as well as the role of hypertension and CVD in progression and the prognosis of COVID-19 patients. “…

Also, myocardial injury caused by coronavirus infection contributed to poor prognosis (81). At the same time, diabetes or some other comorbidities, and the time span between illness onset and antiviral treatment are major factors influencing the prognosis (57).…”

“…Although hypertensive and coronary heart disease patients are often effectively medically managed for their underlying cardiovascular disease conditions, these patients remain prone to develop cardiovascular complications from SARs-Cov2 infection, including arrhythmias, myocarditis, unstable coronary syndrome, and venous and arterial thromboses [5][6][7]. Hypertensive and coronary heart disease patients are also demonstrating higher mortality from COVID-19 than patients without these pre-existing diseases [8].…”
