COVID-19 in a Patient with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia with Pseudohypoxemia

Abstract: Infection with SARS-CoV-2 causes critical disease in approximately 5% of affected patients, particularly the elderly, hypertensive, obese and immunocompromised. Patients with haematological cancer, including chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL), are particularly at risk of complications. Very rarely, patients with extreme leukocytosis may develop spurious hypoxemia, or pseudohypoxemia, which confuses the diagnosis of complications and can lead to intervention errors. We report the case of a patient with CLL, se… Show more

“…It was also higher than the mortality rate due to SARS-CoV-2 infection in Spain in May 2020, in the general population. Age, lymphocytosis, and D-dimers were associated with overall survival in patients with CLL infected with SARS-CoV-2 ( 24 ). Therefore, a more active CLL disease, which manifests as a higher number of lymphocytes, may contribute to a greater vulnerability in these patients during this infection ( 31 ).…”
