COVID-19 Pandemic Consequences on Coastal Water Quality Using WST Sentinel-3 Data: Case of Tangier, Morocco

Abstract: The west coast of Tangier, in northern Morocco, has been affected by industrial wastewater discharge that reaches the ocean through the Boukhalef river. Therefore, the Jbila and Sidikacem beaches near to the Boukhalef river mouth have been classified as polluted for many years. With the aim of determining the COVID-19 pandemic consequences on the Tangier coastal environment, a linear model using Sentinel 3 water surface temperature (WST) has been tested in several locations. Data from April 2019 and April 2020… Show more

“…Generally, most COVID-19 studies have focused on its causes, origin, and its potential impact on water and air quality [18][19][20][21][22], while few of them have documented the possible personal protective equipment waste impact on the environment and the management strategy and approaches to address facemask waste disposal [23,24]. In this sense, recent studies have highlighted the urgent need for developing new management approaches to this kind of waste to avoid the environmental harm and health risks that could be caused by the disposal of facemasks and other PPE items [25].…”

“…Other articles analyze the pandemic's socio-economic impacts in the kingdom (45,59). Further papers address some specific impacts of the pandemic, such as on education (60,61), transport (62), quality of life and wellbeing (63)(64)(65), and environmental pollution (66)(67)(68). Ouhsine et al (69) analyze the impacts of the pandemic on solid waste generation at Moroccan households.…”

“…Xu and Mao, based on GF-1, show that the estimation model based on the logarithmic combination of wavebands can be used to retrieve the chlorophyll-a concentration in the clean water of Qiandao Lake [ 18 ]. Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2/3 data have been used for water quality determination owing to their high distribution rate [ 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 ]. Feng et al proposed the use of GF-1 WFV and Landsat-8 OLI to retrieve the chlorophyll-a concentration in Taihu Lake, which can improve the retrieval accuracy [ 26 ].…”
