COVID-19 Presenting as Acute Necrotizing Pancreatitis

Abstract: The ongoing pandemic of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) originated in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. Various manifestations of coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2 [severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2]) have been reported since the pandemic began. Some articles have reported acute pancreatitis in several patients due to COVID-19 infection. In this case report, we introduce a patient in whom SARS-CoV-2 caused necrotizing pancreatitis. Acute abdomen is one of the manifestations of COVID-19. Various… Show more

“…This was similar to the previous case reports provided by Kandasamy et al [ 5 ], Al Mazrouei et al [ 7 ], Wang et al [ 12 ], Gupta et al [ 17 ], and Lakshmanan et al [ 18 ]. On the other hand, it was different from the previous rare case report provided by Mohammadi Arbati et al [ 15 ] which described an acute necrotizing form of pancreatitis with COVID-19 infection.…”

“…The exact pathophysiology of acute pancreatitis in corona virus disease is still exactly not known. However, Angiotensin receptor-converting enzyme-2 (ACE2) and transmembrane serine protease 2 (TMPRSS2) has been linked to the pathogenesis of acute pancreatitis in corona virus disease [ 9 ]. ACE2 expression is usually found in pancreatic islets, exocrine gland and ductal cells while TMPRSS2 is mainly expressed in ductal cells [ 10 ].…”

“…The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), most commonly presents with fever/chills, malaise, and dry cough. In some instances, adult patients with COVID-19 have presented with acute pancreatitis in the absence of respiratory symptoms ( 1 ). We report a case of severe acute necrotizing pancreatitis associated with COVID-19 in an adolescent female.…”
