CrAlON CAE-PVD coatings for oxidation and wear protection of TZM alloys in FAST sintering applications

Abstract: In this work CrAlO and CrAlO/CrAlN multilayers deposited by cathodic arc evaporation are evaluated as protective films in metal and ceramic powder FAST sintering tool dies fabricated in titanium-zirconium-molybdenum allows (TZM). The films have been characterised in terms of their composition, microstructure, mechanical properties and thermal stability in air at high temperatures between 800 ºC and 1100 ºC; in addition the tribological performance has been analysed at room temperature and at 400 ºC. The crysta… Show more

“…Molybdenum alloys are extensively utilized in various fields such as metallurgy, the chemical industry, and the military due to their exceptional properties including high-temperature resistance, strength, stiffness, and low coefficient of thermal expansion [1][2][3] . Among these alloys, TZM alloy stands out with its remarkable melting point of 2617℃, making it highly suitable for applications in aerospace where high-temperature parts are involved [4][5][6] .…”

“…Other studies focused on multilayered systems for oxidation and corrosion protection of bipolar plates, and high temperature Mo-based sintering tools [20,21]. More recently Liu et al [22] investigated the thermal stability of arc deposited AlCrON and AlCrO interlayers in solar selective stacks up to 800 ºC, showing barely any structural modification.…”
