Creating and testing a GCP game in an asynchronous course environment: The game and future plans

Abstract: Introduction:The National Institute of Health has mandated good clinical practice (GCP) training for all clinical research investigators and professionals. We developed a GCP game using the Kaizen-Education platform. The GCP Kaizen game was designed to help clinical research professionals immerse themselves into applying International Conference on Harmonization GCP (R2) guidelines in the clinical research setting through case-based questions. Methods:Students were invited to participate in the GCP Kaizen game … Show more

“…The Kaizen Education software was developed at our institution in partnership with our National Institutes of Health (NIH)-Funded Center for Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA). It has been used across many disciplines including graduate medical education, dentistry, undergraduate medical education, and to train in research methodology [12,[15][16][17]. The platform consists of two parts: a free, mobile application that users can download onto their personal device (iOS, Android, or web access available) and an online Game Manager Portal that guides educators through the creation of games.…”

“…The Kaizen-Education platform has been used across multiple settings including graduate and undergraduate/graduate medical and nursing education, education in research methods and even patient education. [8][9][10][11][12][13][14] While reports exist on the use of gamification to enhance focused educational settings, we report on two novel uses of our gamification platform to display areas of untapped potential of these techniques. First, we report on the use of gamification to expand a local training opportunity in rigor, reproducibility and transparency (R2T) for those pursuing biomedical research to a national audience.…”

“…The training needs of the clinical and translational research workforce are evolving to include new scientific areas and good clinical practices (GCP). More specialized training for the Social and Behavioral Workforce who work under the clinical and translational research umbrella is particularly needed [1][2][3][4][5]. Progress has been made defining the important elements of health research training and using robust evaluation methods to assess the impact of training programs on the work of scholars, trainees, and research staff [6][7][8][9][10].…”
