Creating the park cool island in an inner-city neighborhood: heat mitigation strategy for Phoenix, AZ

Abstract: We conducted microclimate simulations in ENVI-Met 3.1 to evaluate the impact of vegetation in lowering temperatures during an extreme heat event in an urban core neighborhood park in Phoenix, Arizona. We predicted air and surface temperatures under two different vegetation regimes: existing conditions representative of Phoenix urban core neighborhoods, and a proposed scenario informed by principles of landscape design and architecture and Urban Heat Island mitigation strategies. We found significant potential … Show more

“…The cooling effect of vegetation is documented in Phoenix, where small (<20 ha), highly vegetated neighborhood parks create 'cool islands' when situated in the midst of densely urbanized areas (Chow et al, 2011;Declet-Barreto, Brazel, Martin, Chow, & Harlan, 2013;Jenerette et al, 2007;Middel, Häb, Brazel, Martin, & Guhathakurta, 2014). Vegetation is also found more effective at cooling hotter neighborhoods (Jenerette et al, 2015).…”

“…In contrast, low income parcels and parcels near their city fringe were expected to have a positive impact on nighttime and daytime LST. The former result follows from the documented decrease in vegetation cover among low-income parcels (Declet-Barreto, Brazel, Martin, Chow, & Harlan, 2013;Harlan, Brazel, et al, 2006) and the latter, perhaps, due the prevalence of "xeric-scape" parcels among the newer residential developments on the outer edges of the metroplex. Such explanatory variables were significant only at the first stage of our analyses, which did not account for nested, neighborhood-specific data structures and spatially correlated parcels within the same neighborhood.…”
