Creation of an atlas of filter positions for fluence field modulated CT

Abstract: The methodology proposed in this work will enable DBA-FFMCT and DBA-VOI imaging in the clinic without the need for patient specific air-scans to be performed. In addition, the methodology proposed here is directly applicable to other modulator designs such as piecewise linear, TomoTherapy multi leaf collimators, 2D fluid arrays, and inverse geometry CT.

“…24,26,27,68 Trajectory compilation methods for daily routine could refer to, for example, a set of predefined trajectories, comparable to the atlas by . 69 The atlas consists of a finite number of filter configurations that effectively span all relevant fluence profiles required for various imaging tasks (different body regions, patient sizes, patient position etc.). Alternatively, machine learning-based approaches that estimate the patient anatomy by 3D camera scans or topograms are conceivable.…”

“…Real‐time algorithms that control the DBA movement based on the previous projection are clinically more suitable and have been suggested in the context of alternative DBA approaches 24,26,27,68 . “…Clinically, a real-time optimization 1 or an atlas of positions 14,15 would be used to determine compensator thickness/pressure in place of the more time-consuming procedure outlined in Secs. 2.1 and 2.2.…”
