Criteria for Oral Glucose Tolerance Testing of Obese Minority Youth

Abstract: Aim: To identify those obese minority youth at greatest risk for having an abnormal oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) indicating impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) or type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2). Study Design and Methods: 167 children, who met the ADA criteria for T2DM screening, underwent an OGTT. Logistic regression models were derived for girls, boys, and both. Based on significant variables, algorithms yielding 100% sensitivity were derived to identify candidates for screening. Results: 12% of children s… Show more

“…The number of studies suggesting HbA1c as a predictive parameter for IGT in childhood is limited (8,9,20). Tsay et al (9), who evaluated some parameters (FG, fasting insulin, triglyceride, cholesterol, blood pressure, BMI-Z score and HbA1c) as predictors of IGT, found that only HbA1c is a significant predictor of IGT.…”

“…Studies in children and adolescents suggesting that HbA1c is more predictive of glucose intolerance than 2-hour glucose concentration in OGTT are limited (8,9). In this study, we therefore aimed to investigate whether HbA1c and 1-hour glucose in OGTT are useful parameters for evaluation of glucose homeostasis in children and adolescents.…”

“…One U.S. study of obese minority youth evaluated a variety of risk factors for dysglycemia (20). Their criteria for determining risk consisted of a measure of insulin resistance [homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-IR)] for both girls and boys and cholesterol and HbA1c for boys.…”
