1. I n t r o d u c t i o n Electrical a p p a r a t u s i n s u l a t i o n d e t e ri o r a t e s due t o thermal, e l e c t r i c a l , environmental and mechanical stresses during operat i o n . Malfunction g e n e r a l l y is caused by i n s u l a t i o n d e t e r i o r a t i o n . Hence i n s u l a t i o n d i a g n o s i s r e q u i r e s a good knowledge of t h e d e t e r i o r a t i o n mechanism. Thus, t h e accelera t e d d e t e r i o r a t i o n test r e q u i r e s knowledge of a v a r i e t y of stresses, t h e v o l t a g e chara c t e r i s t i c s of d e t e r i o r a t e d and normal insul a t i o n and t h e accumulation of f i e l d d a t a during operation. This paper p r e s e n t s an i n s u l a t i o n diagn o s t i c method i n c o r p o r a t i n g a v a r i e t y of tests under d i f f e r e n t stresses [I-41. I n s u l a t i o n d i a g n o s i s of high-voltage r o t a t i n g machines h a s h i t h e r t o been judged using n o n d e t e r i o r a t e d i n s u l a t i o n i n t h e following methods: ac c u r r e n t -t e s t method; new ac c u r r e n t -t e s t method [ S ] ; t a n 6 method; and discharge method. These g e n e r a l l y cons t i t u t e t h e i n s u l a t i o n d e t e r i o r a t i o n diagnost i c methods. However, when an i n s u l a t i o n d i a g n o s i s method c o n s i d e r s high-voltages, a s u f f i c i e n t void d i s c h a r g e can n o t be genera t e d when t h e maximum test v o l t a g e i s low and a c c u r a t e measurement i s u n l i k e l y . Moreover, when t h e maximum test v o l t a g e i s h i g h , i n s u l a t i o n damage can occur [6, 71. S t u d i e s based on d a t a from a v a r i e t y of i n s u l a t i o n diagnoses on two of t h e c h a r a c t e r i s t i c v a l u e s obtained with low a p p l i e d v o l t a g e , nondet e r i o r a t e d i n s u l a t i o n c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s stemming from t h e i n i t i a l v a l u e COI of c a p a c i t a n c e Co below t h e discharge v o l t a g e and Cox, y i e l d (CoI/Cox -1) and t h e r a t i o Rw/RD with res p e c t t o t h e d e t e r i o r a t e d i n s u l a t i o n v o l t a g e . These q u a n t i t i e s are necessary f o r i n s u l at i o n d i a g n o s t i c s . Several r e p o r t s have been published on a motorette c l o s e i n s i z e t o t h e a c t u a l apparatus. These r e p o r t s d e a l mainly with t h e e v a l u a t i o n test, a simple thermal degradat i o n t e s t using t h e model b a r c o i l and the bending f a t i g u e t e s t . 11 2. Sample and T e s t i n g Method 2 . 1 Mechanical e v a l u a t i o n test u t i l i z -This i s a g e n e r a l test t o determine t h e thermal p r o p e r t i e s of t h e i n s u l a t i o n system.
