PurposeThe purpose of this study is to identify a comprehensive list of main enablers of successful implementation of green manufacturing (GM) practices in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Based on the inputs from Irish SMEs' experts, a validated conceptual hierarchy model of the identified enablers is developed to analyse and prioritise the most dominant ones.Design/methodology/approachData were collected using a questionnaire survey responded by various professionals in Irish manufacturing SMEs. Experts' opinions were analysed using interpretive structural modelling (ISM) and cross-impact matrix multiplication applied to classification (MICMAC) to distinguish the mutual influences amongst the nine identified enablers.FindingsThe findings revealed that from the Irish SMEs' perspective, strong green supply chain relations are the outcome of successfully implementing GM and not a driver of the other enablers. Furthermore, lower manufacturing costs are found to arise as a result of GM practices in SMEs.Practical implicationsIt is discussed that emulating the actions of larger companies will not necessarily yield the same results for SMEs. Innovation will become a cornerstone of remaining competitive in a sustainable environment, which is facilitated by closer green supply chain relations.Originality/valueThe reported findings in this article contribute to theory and practice of GM and SMEs research domains by systematically identified, classified and ranked enablers in a conceptual hierarchal model from the perspective of Irish SMEs. This research lays the foundations for further analysis of the GM practices enablers in a time when UN mandates and EU regulations are increasingly impacting SMEs all around Europe and especially Ireland.

Factors that affect the interest of the manufacturing industries to implement the green industry certification regulation in Indonesia

Green Industry Standards, as a regulation to achieve sustainable industrial development, currently still have little interest in its application in Indonesia, especially through certification. There are only 27 industries that have implemented Green Industry certification from a total of 33,923 industries in Indonesia until 2019. Based on this data, it is necessary to evaluate the application of current Green Industry certification regulations. The findings of this study are expected to be used as one of the information sources for government strategic consideration to increase industrial interest on Green Industry certification implementation. This study is done by analyzing the factors that drive and hinder industrial interest in implementing Green Industry certification. The method used in this study is a quantitative method conducted by a survey of 27 certified industries and 20 uncertified industries using a questionnaire with a Linkert scale and then processed statistically. The results of the research show that the driving factors of industry's interest in implementing Green Industry certification up to 100% was to improve company image, whereas 94.5% of factor inhibiting interest in certification stated by respondents was the currently limited Green Industry Standards that are only available to a certain scope of certain commodities.

The pursuit of net‐zero economy goals and government emphasis on sustainable performance has compelled numerous firms to focus on sustainable production through the adoption of net‐zero economy‐based green innovation. The digital transformation of manufacturing systems and supply chains, supported by the utilization of big data and the adoption of net‐zero economy‐oriented lean practices in the presence of net‐zero economy‐based green practices, can converge to enhance net‐zero economy‐based green innovation in manufacturing firms. This convergence leads to an improvement in green competitive advantage and net zero‐based green performance. To examine the aforementioned linkages using a framework based on the dynamic capabilities view paradigm, a time‐lagged design was employed to collect data from 594 manufacturing firms. The empirical findings indicate that big data analytics capabilities and net‐zero economy‐oriented lean practices of firms significantly influence net‐zero economy‐based green innovation. Green organizational identity strengthens the effect of net zero‐based green innovation on green competitive advantage and net zero‐based green performance.
