This chapter explores the essential role of Latinx educators in nurturing critical linguistic and literacy awareness among English Learners, referred to as Emergent Bilinguals. Specifically, the focus will be on the impact of Latinx educators in the English Language Development (ELD) classroom. This chapter asserts that the work of a Latinx ELD educator is based on a critical understanding of the oppressive systemic structures of assimilation policies, linguistic dominance, and constructed academic challenges and labels imposed on Emergent Bilinguals due to historical marginalization and oppressive systems, often exacerbated by political agendas and anti-immigrant sentiments. Despite the challenges posed by the monoglossic and hegemonic nature of ELD policies, Latinx educators can employ culturally relevant practices to amplify the voices of their students and communities within the framework of the ELD classroom.
