Crop Suitability and Soil Fertility Mapping using Geographic Information System (GIS)

Abstract: This study has developed soil fertility map and determined crop suitability in the province of Bukidnon, Mindanao Philippines using GIS. It entails combining and analyzing agro-environmental, soil information and crops biological requirements for growth.Result of analyzed soil samples revealed that light clay soils dominated the province. Combining these results with the determined soil chemical properties showed that the province is of high soil fertility in 300-500 masl, medium fertility in 501-900 masl and … Show more

“…Geographic information system (GIS) is a powerful tool which helps to integrate many types of spatial information such as agro-climatic zone, land use, soil management, etc. to derive useful information (Adornado and Yoshida 2008 Furthermore, GIS generated soil fertility maps may serve as a decision support tool for nutrient management (Iftikar et al 2010). A number of studies on soil fertility mapping have been documented (Ravikumar et al 2004) but no study was made including more than one watershed across a climatic gradient.…”

“…The findings of the land suitability for cacao development in Keerom Regency are shown in Table 1, and the distribution of land suitability for cacao is shown in Figure 4. The appropriateness of the land is an important aspect in increasing a plant's productivity [12]. As a result, growing cacao on appropriate terrain in Keerom Regency is likely to boost cacao production.…”
