Cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the Nijmegen Cochlear Implant Questionnaire into Italian

Abstract: The NCIQ is a quantifiable self-assessment health-related quality of life instrument specific for cochlear implant users. The aim of this study was to culturally adapt the NCIQ into Italian (I-NCIQ). A prospective instrument validation study was conducted. Cross-cultural adaptation and validation were accomplished. Cronbach α was used to test internal consistency in 51 CI users and in a control group composed by 38 post-lingual deaf adult on a waiting list for a CI. ICC test was used for test-retest reliabilit… Show more

“…Nine studies had published subdomain scores of the NCIQ before and after cochlear implantation, from which a meta‐analysis of the NCIQ subdomain scores was performed . All subdomains showed improvement in QOL after implantation ( P < .0001), although a wide range of improvements was observed (from largest to smallest): Basic Sound Processing (Δ = 52.7), Advanced Sound Processing (Δ = 39.7), Activity (Δ = 30.3), Social (Δ = 24.8), Speech Production (Δ = 23.6), and Self‐esteem (Δ = 22.2).…”

“…The use of a specific questionnaire to assess the QoL in CI users allows identification of particularities pertinent to this clinical group of cases in order to provide a useful clinical record that can guide treatment goals and record small changes after intervention (16) . Translation and validation of the NCIQ in several languages, namely, Italian, Spanish, and Chinese, has enabled wide use of this instrument in the current clinical setting (17)(18)(19) . As for the translation and semantic adaptation of the NCIQ to Brazilian Portuguese, it is worth noting that the participants of this study did not find difficulties in understanding the content of the items.…”

“…Studies planning their preoperative HRQoL measurement postimplantation, for example by sending questionnaires about HRQoL before CI after implantation, were also excluded [Djalilian et al, 1999;Shin et al, 2000;Francis et al, 2002;Cohen et al, 2004;Di Nardo et al, 2014;Tang et al, 2017]. Participants younger than 50 years were included in 28 studies [Maillet et al, 1995;Summerfield and Marshall, 1995;Knutson et al, 1998;Palmer et al, 1999;Hamzavi et al, 2001;Padilla Romero et al, 2004;Mo et al, 2005;Damen et al, 2007;Noble et al, 2008;Pan et al, 2009;Olze et al, 2011;Arnoldner et al, 2014a, b;Francis et al, 2015;Rösli et al, 2015;Rumeau et al, 2015;Sanchez-Cuadrado et al, 2015;Derks et al, 2016;Ottaviani et al, 2016;Ramakers et al, 2016;Runge et al, 2016;Jayakody et al, 2017;Kelsall et al, 2017;Ambert-Dahan et al, 2018;Roland et al, 2018;Summerfield and Barton, 2019].
