“…ovis titres in sheep which had been vaccinated against Lucilia cuprina (Wiedemann). Cross reactivity among insects in antibody response has also been demonstrated in other studies (Mock, 1974;Jones & Lloyd, 1987;Baldo & Panzani, 1988;Matthes et al, 1996). Stable flies and mosquitoes were present in the sheep barn in the summer in both years, although not in high numbers, and it is likely that the ewes had been exposed to other insects before they were purchased for this study.…”

“…This may suggest that qualitative rather than quantitative differences in the secreted antibodies are important. Matthes et al (1996) found that serum from sheep infested with Psoroptes ovis (Hering) recognized twenty-four different antigens from P. ovis. A similar wide range of antigens is likely in B. ovis and any one of these may be important.…”

“…Various workers have earlier indicated an adverse effect of psoroptic mange on the immune system of sheep (Fisher, 1972; Boyce and Zarnke, 1996; Matthes et al., 1996; Ochs et al., 2001; Kenyon and Knox, 2002) and cattle (Losson et al., 1988; Uhlir, 1989) but no report could be traced with detailed effect of sarcoptic mange on CMI and HI responses in sheep. The present work indicated an adverse effect of infection on both cell‐mediated and humoral immunity.…”

“…ovis antigen-speci®c immunoglobulin IgG but not IgE antibody titres have been monitored in primary infestations of sheep (O'Brien 1992, Bates 1997. However, lesional histopathology of naturally occurring infestations of sheep has revealed a pronounced eosinophil in®ltrate (Rovere & Nunez 1977, Rosa & Moschini 1988) and sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis/Western blot studies (Matthes et al 1996) have demonstrated the presence of P. ovis antigen-speci®c IgE antibody in sera from infested sheep and deer. These observations are consistent with the participation of immediate hypersensitivity in the immunopathogenesis of cutaneous lesions but give no indication of its role in protective immunity.…”
