Cross‐sectional associations of impaired glucose metabolism measures with bleeding on probing and periodontitis

Abstract: Aim This study assessed the associations of prediabetes and insulin resistance with bleeding on probing (BOP) and periodontitis among adults. Materials and methods We included 1,191 Hispanic adults aged 40-65 years, free of diabetes, enrolled in the San Juan Overweight Adults Longitudinal Study. Pre-diabetes was defined as impaired fasting glucose (IFG), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), or impaired glycated hemoglobin. Impaired one-hour plasma glucose (1hPG) was defined as levels>155 mg/dL. Insulin resistan… Show more

“…These findings corroborate with the findings presented by Gomez‐Moreno and colleagues that showed high bleeding tendency in patients with higher HbA1c levels. Another recent cross‐sectional study proved that prediabetic and diabetic states are associated with increased BOP tendency . It is also note‐worthy that mean peri‐implant PD around short implants was statistically significantly higher in T2DM patients as compared to prediabetic and non‐diabetic patients.…”

“…In short, we observed that IR was significantly associated with the extent of periodontitis, but no differences were observed among patients with respect to the other periodontal variables studied when they were classified by HOMA‐IR. In this sense, a recent study found that HOMA‐IR tends to increase the odds of severe periodontitis, although the association was not significant (Pérez et al., ). Further studies are needed to clarify the role of HOMA‐IR in periodontitis among diabetes‐free participants.…”

“…Supplemental data were also collected in the study to evaluate additional hypotheses formulated before data collection. Recruitment efforts and retention have been previously described . Eligibility criteria for this cohort study included the following: (a) age between 40 and 65 years, (b) overweight or obese (BMI ≥ 25.0 kg/m 2 ), and (c) free of clinically diagnosed diabetes prior to the baseline examination.…”

“…Recruitment efforts and retention have been previously described. 19,20 Eligibility criteria for this cohort study included the following: (a) age between 40 The study consisted of multiracial individuals of Hispanic ethnicity, who reported their race as White (25%), Black (14%), and Mixed (61%). From the 1351 baseline eligible participants, 1028 (76%) came to the 3-year follow-up visit.…”
