Cross-sectional Survey of Hantavirus Infection, Brazil

Abstract: A cross-sectional serosurvey was conducted to assess the proportion of persons exposed to hantaviruses in a virus-endemic area of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Findings of this study suggested the presence of >1 hantaviruses circulating in this region causing hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, mild disease, or asymptomatic infection.

“…The IgG prevalence in this study was lower than that of other regions in Brazil where HCPS is highly endemic, such as 13.6% in the State of Mato Grosso 11 . However, an IgG prevalence of 2% was reported in Uberlandia City in Minas Gerais State 12 , which is another hantavirus-endemic region; this is similar to the prevalence found in the present study. The IgG prevalence found in the present study is in keeping with prevalence rates in other regions where HCPS has not been described, such as in the southern parts of Santa Catarina State (2.3%) 13 , in Ceará State (2.8%) 14 , an in Ilhéus City in Bahia State (0.6%) 15 .…”

“…More HCPS cases were reported in Minas Gerais than in any other state in Brazil 10 . Genetic studies associated HCPS cases with hantavirus Araraquara, possibly the most virulent of Brazilian hantaviruses, and identified the wild rodent Necromys lasiurus as a reservoir of this virus 5,15. We recently reported asymptomatic human infections in this area 8 . We have now conducted a serological survey to reveal hantavirus infection in rodents and to further understand its ecoepidemiology in an important endemic area in Minas Gerais, Brazil.…”

“…n the Americas, hantavirus species that occur at low frequency are associated with the severe disease hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) (1,2), and species that occur at higher frequency are associated with milder disease (3)(4)(5). In Panama, HPS is caused by the Choclo virus, for which a common rodent, the fulvous pygmy rice rat (6), is host.…”
