“…In the reconstruction of hand after traumatic amputation, one should put reconstructing the thumb at top priority. The thumb accounts for the tripod pinch through opposition, and therefore, loss of thumb impairs hand function by 50% [2]. If the amputated thumb is not replantable, one should consider other options such as pollicization of the index finger, toe transfer, and deepen of the 1st web space.…”

“…In traumatic amputations of upper extremities, replantation is commonly attempted with high success rates. However, successful replantation not only implies the survival of length but also must show good functional outcomes of the restored hand [1,2]. Hence, due to the dominant importance of thumb, accounting for 40% to 50% of hand function, the utmost priority is on the salvage of thumb.…”

“…Allerdings handelt es sich in den meisten Fäl-len um Notfallsituationen mit Amputationsverletzungen, bei denen der Über-sichtlichkeit halber weiter von Replantationen gesprochen werden sollte. Nur selten wird über elektive heterotope Transplantationen berichtet [14,22,24].…”

“…Since then, 23 more have been performed worldwide (Table 1). Hand transplantations have aroused public interest and started debates in the hand surgery community (Siegler 1998, Foucher 1999, Lee and Mathes 1999, Lee 2002, Lundborg 1999, Herndon 2000, Altman 2001, Manske 2001, Cooney and Hentz 2002, Jones 2002, Lubbe 2003, Reigstad and Hetland 2003. The transplantations may either be described as a breakthrough in reconstructive surgery or as "technology over good sense" (Strickland 1999) due to the need for longterm immunosuppression for a non-life threatening condition.…”
