Crosslinking of reactive α‐olefins and maleic anhydride copolymers as oil sorbers

Abstract: Octene (OC) and tetradecene (TD) monomers were copolymerized with maleic anhydride (MA) with a low conversion (<10% conversion) to determine their reactivity ratios. The monomers were copolymerized with different molar percentages of MA and OC or TD (90/10, 70/30, 50/50, and 10/90) with benzoyl peroxide as an initiator to produce MA/a-olefin copolymers of different compositions. Fourier transform infrared was used to determine the copolymer compositions. The monomer reactivity ratios of the MA/OC and MA/TD cop… Show more

“…For some oil-absorbents in literature, soluble fraction (SF) (Atta et al, , 2006(Atta et al, , 2007a(Atta et al, , 2007b or gel fraction (GF) (Zhou & Cho, 2002) was measured to investigate the cross-linking of the absorbent networks. In the present study, cross-link degree (D) of the oil-absorbents was determined in a similar way to characterize the oil-absorbents.…”

“…Oil absorption test 2.6.1. Oil absorbency The oil absorbency (Q) was determined by the method reported in literature (Atta et al, , 2006(Atta et al, , 2007a(Atta et al, , 2007bKulawardana & Neckers, 2010;Wu & Zhou, 2009b;Zhou & Cho, 2001. A quantity of about 0.02 g of dried oil-absorbent sample with known weight (m 3 ) was put into a filter bag and immersed in four different oils (tetrachloromethane, chloroform, xylene, and toluene) at room temperature.…”

“…Авторы [33] сополимеризовали мономеры октена (ОК) и тетрадецена (ТД) с малеиновым ангидридом (МА) при низкой конверсии (менее 10%). Мономеры сополимеризовали с различ-ными мольными процентами МА и ОК или ТД (90/10, 70/30, 50/50 и 10/90) с бензоилпероксидом в качестве инициатора для получения сополиме-ров разных составов.…”

“…Absorbent materials are attractive for oil and organic solvent removal. There are several reports in the literature describing the synthesis and swelling properties of polymers for oil or organic solvent cleanup 12–19. To be a good absorbing material, a sorbent should have hydrophobicty and oleophilicity, a high and fast uptake capacity, and reusability.…”
