Crude extract of Trichoderma elicits agarwood substances in cell suspensionculture of the tropical tree, Aquilaria malaccensis Lam.

Abstract: Agarwood is the precious fragrant wood produced by the tropical tree Aquilaria, often after elicitation by wounding or fungal attack. In this study we established a cell suspension culture of A. malaccensis from leaf-derived callus and induced agarwood production in the culture using fungal elicitors. Elicitors were made from crude mycelial extracts of two fungal species from the genera Trichoderma and Lasidiplodia. The elicitors were added to the cell suspension culture, initiated with 2 g of fresh calli, at … Show more

“…24 Wood samples (10 g) were extracted with methanol (150 mL) for 6 h. Then, the methanol solvent was evaporated and dried extract samples were kept at -18 °C until further experiments. [26][27][28][29] Tab 1. Hence this solvent is used favorably to extract polar components including phenolic compounds and flavonoids.…”

“…Meanwhile, Study 3 used methanol to extract dry cell of agarwood that harvested from tissue culture. Jayaraman and Mohamed (2015) were developed plant tissue culture from agarwood leaves cell for rapid mass production to regenerate agarwood plant and produce secondary metabolites from the plant such as aromatic compounds. Suzuki et al (2017) extracted powdered Aquilaria filaria heartwood with 95% methanol (room temperature, 72 hr).…”

“…Interestingly, cell culture technique has been used by Study 3 to produce the aroma of agarwood in the laboratory. Jayaraman and Mohamed (2015) were established a cell suspension culture of Aquilaria malaccensis from leaf-derived callus and used a fungal elicitor to induce agarwood production in the culture. Cell suspension cultures were treated with Trichoderma extract; a fungal elicitor to increase fragrance intensity comparable to the aroma of agarwood.…”

“…Menurut Jayaraman and Mohamed (2015), pada kombinasi 8 g/L inokulum kalus pada suspensi A. malaccensis dan 8 mg/L ekstrak Trichoderma terdeteksi beberapa senyawa penting gaharu seperti 8 -epi-gama-eudesmol, -guaiena, dan aloaromadendrena oksida-1.…”
