“…Previous culture-based studies showed a higher prevalence of Aspergillus and Penicillium [20][21][22]42], which are traditionally the most expected genus in indoors environments. It seems that this is a bias of culture-based procedures as our results are coincident with other molecular approaches [24,43,56]. Nevertheless, Penicillium polonicum and two species of Aspergillus (A. subversicolor and A. flavus) were detected in 50% (6/12) and 33.3% (4/12) of the samples from houses and the genera were also cultured.…”

“…Interestingly, the isolate of C. orthopsilosis from the hands of a HCW may reinforce the hypothesis that, similar to C. parapsilosis, it may have been transferred from the hands of HCWs [40]. Moreover, isolation of A. melanogenum, N. albida, and N. liquefaciens from high touch areas, which are reported to have elevated MIC values to various antifungals [41][42][43] and finding Aureobasidium melanogenum in both blood and the environment are worrisome. Findings obtained from environmental screening and microsatellite typing may collectively imply the lack of proper hygiene (both hands and hospital environments) and necessitate the application of effective infection control strategies to eradicate/control fungemia caused by various yeast species.…”

“…In this context, it should also be added that Cr albidus, which is a known environmental fungus, was also reported to be involved in rare human systemic infections in immunocompromised individuals. 30,31 We could not detect the presence of dermatophytes in the Israeli beach sands, which possibly might be due to the high temperature of the sands. The presence of dermatophytes was reported rather scarcely in the literature, 32,33 and might be associated with specific ecological conditions, such as those found on the Madeira archipelago.…”
