Crystal Structure of S8 Molecule from Thiourea

Abstract: Sulfur S8 was isolated from a reaction solution of thiourea and bismuth nitrate in N,N-dimethylformamide. The crystal structure was determined by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction method at 90 K. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Fddd with a = 10.3310(8)Å, b = 12.6786(10)Å, c = 24.3519(19)Å, V = 3189.7(4)Å 3 , Dx = 2.136 g/cm 3 , and Z = 6. The R1 [I > 2σ(I)] and wR2 (all data) values are 0.0220 and 0.0570, respectively, for all 1864 independent reflections. The S8 molecule has a crown-shaped … Show more

“…Moreover, the formation of new crystalline phases was clearly observed. Indeed, jointly with residual TiS 2 /HA, elemental sulfur was formed in its low-temperature/low-pressure orthorhombic polymorph ( Fddd space group [ 33 ]). The complete Le Bail/single peak and Rietveld refinement plot for such sample, which contains TiS 2 /HA, an unknown contaminant and crystalline sulfur, is shown in Figure 4 .…”

“…The combination of these approaches led to the formation of a homogenous CdS surface. Along with offering a secondary sulfur ion source, the MPA inhibited the effect of the Ag + ions in the chemical reaction, which helped in the formation of the orthorhombic structures 86 . In S 8 , a crown-like structure was noted which involved all the ‘s’ atoms in the single disulphide bond formation between one another using the 3p y , 3p z electrons and attaining stability 87 .…”

“…Thiourea forms orthorhombic structures that block silver ions. 55 S8 orthorhombic has a crown-like structure, with all atoms forming a single di-sulphide bond using 3 p y , 3 p z electrons. 56 Thiol ions SH − and S 2− are released in cadmium-equivalent amounts (and containing silver ions).…”
