This article studies the ideological reactions of communist regimes to the advent of a post-communist world. It examines two cases of reformed communist regimes (China and Vietnam) with two relatively unreformed cases (North Korea and Cuba) to understand different legitimation strategies employed during and after the downfall of the Soviet Union. Theoretically, the article compares two ideal-type approaches to ideology in autocratic regimes. The first approach emphasizes semantic ‘freezing’ over time. The consistency and coherence of ideology is underlined. The second approach argues that the success of an ideology lies in its ability to be a dynamic, adaptive force that can react with changing circumstances. Four parameters help to distinguish the freeze-frame end from the adaptation pole: (1) the autonomy over semantic changes, (2) the timing, (3) the velocity and (4) the distance that an ideology moves. Using qualitative case-based analysis that is enriched with quantitative text analysis of communist party documents, this article compares these contending conceptions of ideology with each other in the four cases. Sharing similar starting conditions in the 1970s, the article shows how China and Vietnam harnessed a flexible legitimation strategy while North Korea and Cuba adopted a comparatively rigid legitimation approach.

RESUMO O sistema socioeconômico cubano tem passado por profundas transformações desde 1959, quando ocorreu a Revolução que daria origem ao socialismo no país, poucos anos depois. Nesse sentido, esta dissertação tem o objetivo de analisar o sistema socioeconômico cubano entre 1959 e 2018 no que diz respeito à sua concepção, evolução e situação atual, particularmente nos seguintes âmbitos: emprego e renda, educação, saúde e seguridade social. O trabalho se justifica pelo fato de permitir analisar criticamente o sistema socioeconômico cubano e, a partir disso, lançar luz sobre alguns dos principais desafios recentes enfrentados pelo país. Verificou-se que, a despeito da predominante participação do Estado nos processos de produção e distribuição da riqueza, o sistema socioeconômico do país tem gradualmente aumentado a participação de outros atores econômicos, ainda que sem se distanciar do sistema socialista originalmente instituído em Cuba, particularmente no que diz respeito ao papel do Estado como principal empregador.

Management interest in “good companies to work for,” or “exemplary organizations,” has attracted the interest of researchers in the United States and Europe. We contribute to the literature on exemplary organizations by studying the representation of “exemplary organizations” in an unusual context, Cuba, and by inviting scholars to explore the cross‐cultural differences between what in different countries is viewed as an exemplary organization. Until now, studies on the best companies to work for have focused on companies operating in capitalistic economies. We aim to develop a better understanding of the representation of what a good place might be in an economic and ideological context that is in sharp contrast with the contexts in which this theme has been studied previously. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
