Bracts are the metamorphic non-flower organ in angiosperm plants. The variation of the color and shape of bracts was found to be neo-functionalized (i.e., similar to petals), garnering research interest as a pollinator attractor. Bougainvillea is known for its specialized, large, and colorful bracts, which contrast with its tiny colorless flowers. As a plant whose bracts vary greatly in terms of coloration, the molecular mechanisms for Bougainvillea bract coloration and polychroism are largely unknown. The lack of genomic information for Bougainvillea largely hinders studies into the evolution and genetic basis of bract color variation. In this study, a pan-transcriptome of bracts obtained from 18 Bougainvillea glabra accessions was employed to investigate the global population-level germplasm kinship and the gene regulation network for bract color variation. Our results showed that the bracts of B. glabra accessions have largely differentiated International Commission on Illumination (CIE) L-a-b values. Moreover, germplasm kinship detected using principal component analysis, phylogeny, and admixture analysis showed three optimal subgroups, two of them distinctly clustered, which were not directly correlated with bract color variation at the population level. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between accessions of high vs. low L-a-b values revealed several considerable upregulated genes related to bract color L-a-b variation. A weighted gene co-expression network was constructed, and eight co-expressed regulation modules were identified that were highly correlated with variation in bract CIE L-a-b color values. Several candidate DEGs and co-expressed hub genes (e.g., GERD, SGR, ABCA3, GST, CYP76AD1, CYP76C, and JAZ) that were tightly associated with bract color variation were eventually determined responsible for L-a-b colorations, which might be the core regulation factors contributing to the B. glabra bract color variation. This study provides valuable insights into the research on germplasm kinship, population-level pan-transcriptome expression profiles, and the molecular basis of color variation of key innovative bracts in horticultural Bougainvillea.

La nochebuena (Euphorbia pulcherrima Willd. ex Klotsch) crece de manera silvestre en los bosques tropicales mexicanos en forma arbustiva y con brácteas rojas llamativas y con menor frecuencia presenta brácteas blancas. El uso principal de la nochebuena nativa es el ornamental, poco se ha estudiado acerca de las propiedades nutrimentales o nutracéuticas de la planta. El objetivo del presente estudio fue determinar el perfil de flavonoides y ácidos fenólicos presentes en los extractos metanólico-acuosos en brácteas de cinco variedades de nochebuena de sol para conocer sus propiedades nutrimentales y promover su consumo. Se utilizaron brácteas secas (0.5 g por muestra). La extracción de los compuestos se hizo a partir de una solución de metanol/agua (80:20 v/v). Se llevó a cabo un perfil de ácidos fenólicos y flavonoides por cromatografía de líquidos de alta resolución (CLAR) acoplado a un detector de arreglo de diodos. Los ácidos gálico y siringico fueron los que presentaron las concentraciones más altas en las variedades analizadas. El flavonoide rutina se encontró en altas concentraciones en todas las variedades, sin embargo, en la variedad Juan Pablo no se logró detectar floridzina y floretina. Estos resultados sugieren que las brácteas de nochebuena pueden aportar antioxidantes importantes al consumirse.

ABSTRACT Objective: To improve the asexual propagation of the sun poinsettia Valenciana variety using growth regulators and monitoring the position of the buds on the stem. Methodology: We compared root length, shoot length, and the number of roots, shoots, and leaves between control plants and plants with five different concentrations of three growth regulators (indole butyric acid, naphthaleneacetic acid, and gibberellic acid). We also evaluated the effect of the position of the axillary or vegetative buds on the stem on the same parameters. The data were analyzed by analysis of variance and multiple comparisons of means. Results: The treatments with the highest root length, shoot length, and number of roots, nodes, and leaves were 2 A (AIB 200 mg L-1, basal part), 3 A (AIB 300 mg L-1, basal part), and 3 B (AIB mg L-1, intermediate part). Implications: This work helps solve a technical issue of sun poinsettia production in Mexico. Conclusions: The application of indolbutyric acid at concentrations of 200 mg L-1 and 300 mg L-1 in stem cuttings of the intermediate and base promotes increased root and aerial development. RESUMEN Objetivo: Mejorar la propagación asexual de la nochebuena de sol, variedad Valenciana mediante el uso de reguladores de crecimiento y la posición de las yemas en el tallo. Metodología: Se realizó un experimento con un testigo y cinco tratamientos con diferentes concentraciones de tres reguladores de crecimiento (ácido indolbutírico, ácido naftalenoacético y ácido giberélico) y la posición de las yemas axilares o vegetativas en el tallo. Se evaluó el número de raíces, la longitud de las raíces, el número de nudos, la longitud de los brotes y el número de hojas. Los datos obtenidos se analizaron mediante análisis de varianza y se realizaron comparaciones múltiples de medias. Resultados: Los tratamientos con mayor número y longitud de raíces, así como longitud de brotes, número de nudos y hojas fueron 2A (AIB 200 mg L-1, parte basal), 3A (AIB 300 mg L-1, parte basal) y 3B (AIB mg L-1, parte intermedia). Implicaciones: Este trabajo contribuye a la resolución de un problema técnico de los productores de nochebuena de sol en México. Conclusiones: La aplicación de ácido indolbutírico a concentraciones de 200 mg L-1 y 300 mg L-1 en esquejes de tallo de la parte intermedia y de la base, promueve un mayor desarrollo radicular y aéreo.
