“…In the passage quoted above "the free play of the faculties" is reminiscent of Kant and the use of the expression "aesthetic education" later in the speech alludes to Schiller's Letters on the Aesthetic Education of Man (1795). In previous research, the connections to the aesthetic tradition have often led to the interpretation of Swedish cultural policy as a distribution apparatus where a fixed (bourgeois) cultural heritage and high-quality contemporary art-works are to be disseminated to the population in a grand project to reform their taste (Bjurström 2008;2018;Frenander 2014). However, if we turn to the history of the avant-garde and André Breton's first surrealist manifesto instead, a different genealogy can be revealed which foregrounds central, but largely overlooked, elements in Edenman's programme.…”

“…But in the open public sphere there was much controversy about which taste should prevail. Bjurström (2008) argues that the "Great Reformation of Taste" in the mid-19 th century, advocated by people like Matthew Arnold, was a movement to establish universal norms for "good culture". It was an elite movement whose mission was to "educate" people and bring them to a "higher" cultural level and thereby make them "better" humans and citizens.…”
