Curating complexity: An artful approach for real-world system transitions

Abstract: This paper puts forward a 'curatorial approach' to systems transitions, which is a novel, practical and transparent way to deal with participation in complex and conflictual contexts. We argue that the complexity of transitions cannot be adequately addressed through traditional analytical tools. Alternatively, we propose an approach that can engage with multiple ways of knowing and expression, sustaining and developing a sense of 'meaning' in the planning process. We situate this within a systems perspective t… Show more

“…Transitions research has in this regard been positioned as a transdisciplinary "mode-2′ science (Rotmans, 2005) and subsequent work in transition management has further developed intervention repertoires and action research methods through which to co-create transitions knowledge (van den Bosch, 2010). More broadly there is an increasing commitment to research that not only describes societal transformation processes, but initiates and catalyzes them (Schneidewind et al, 2016;Luederitz et al, 2017;Kampelmann et al, 2018). Building on the "experimental turnß in the social sciences, various methodological approaches of real-world experimentation and participatory action research are being developed that make the commitments to knowledge co-production operational.…”

“…Popular reference to the economic, the social, and the environmental as core categories fosters reductionist views on reality since, as categories, they are far too big (Ekardt 2020). Several authors have pointed to a variety of aspects not given due attention in sustainability research (e.g., Kampelmann et al 2018;Weiser et al 2017;Avelino 2017;Folke et al 2019). Others reflect on the contested nature of relevant dimensions (Constance et al 2018).…”

“…Finally, by the step-wise integration of knowledge to parameterize the subsystems and describe their interactions helps to co-develop knowledge on the system, but also knowledge on potential intervention scales or decision levels to accomplish sustainable development (see e.g. Kampelmann et al 2018). A remaining challenge will however consist in the enrolment of actors from practice to bridge or potentially close the gap between land use science and land use practice (e.g.…”
