Curcumin as a putative antidepressant

Abstract: Due to inadequate efficacy of antidepressants, various new chemical entities and agents of natural origin have been tested for therapeutic efficacy both alone and to augment existing antidepressants, producing varied clinical results. This article summarizes the basic properties of curcumin and its mechanisms of action, with specific emphasis on the etiopathogenesis of depression, preclinical and current clinical evidence, and future research directions, to better understand the possible role of curcumin in tr… Show more

“…Therefore, it seems reasonable to assume that observed high efficacy of CLE in protecting stress triggered alterations in body weight and core temperature is mainly due to its ability to stimulate AMPK inside the gastrointestinal tract. However, the question whether or not other known bioactivities of curcuminoids observed in cellular and other in vitro models are also involved in often reported analgesics and antidepressants like efficacies of curcuminoids5, 40 still remain open or speculative only.…”

“…In animal study, chronic and systemic administration of infliximab (TNF-α inhibitor) decreases depression and anxiety-like behavior in rat model of chronic mild stress (Karson et al, 2013). Culcumin is also a natural product with strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects (Seo et al, 2015). Doxycycline and minocylcine, which belong to the tetracycline family of antibiotics, also have strong anti-inflammatory effects, which may have antidepressant effects (Levine et al, 1996).…”

“…Although the antidepressant mechanisms of curcumin on mental disorders are not yet entirely elucidated, there has been more and more research focusing on related studies in recent years. 26,115,116 As one of the most rapidly growing fields in the psychiatric research, different mechanisms for the antidepressant effects of curcumin have been proposed, as shown in Figure 1. In the past decades, growing evidence has supported…”
