Current Evidence of Chinese Herbal Constituents with Effects on NMDA Receptor Blockade

Abstract: NMDA receptor (NMDA-R) is an important molecular entity governing a wide range of functions in the central nervous system. For example, the NMDA-R is involved in memory and cognition, and impairment of both (as in Alzheimer’s Disease) is attributed to NMDA-mediated neurotoxicity. With greater understanding of the NMDA-R structure, antagonists with varying degrees of binding-site and subtype selectivity have been developed and put into clinical use. Discovery of target-specific Chinese herbs have also been made… Show more

“…Chinese herbal medicine, together with acupuncture, autonomy, and Chinese massage are called traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) therapies. Recently, TCM supports insightful strategies in treating neurologic diseases, and a variety of active ingredients of Chinese herbal medicine have been proven to specifically modulate glutamate targets for improving neurologic disorders [ 9 - 11 ]. To completely overview the effects of these natural constituents on neurological diseases through regulating glutamate signaling, we gathered the relevant literature since 2000, and a majority of these studies were concentrated around the last three years.…”

“…The iridoids possess a wide range of pharmacological properties, including anti-angiogenesis, neuroprotection and cardiovascular protection (47). The iridoids from Radix Scrophulariae have been identified as the active class of compounds with the neuroprotective effect (48). There are a number of previous studies demonstrating that early administration of extracts from natural plants may improve cerebral ischemia reperfusion injury and neurological function (4951).…”

“…NMDA-R activity has been linked to numerous herbs and their constituents that have been shown to improve memory, cognition, and protect the nervous system 29 . Curcumin extracted from Curcuma longa L. showed inhibitory properties against NMDA activation in rat retinal neurons.…”
