Current status of molecular markers for early detection of sporadic pancreatic cancer

Abstract: Pancreatic cancer (PC) is a highly lethal malignancy with near 100% mortality. This is in part due to the fact that most patients present with metastatic or locally advanced disease at the time of diagnosis. Significantly, in nearly 95% of PC patients there is neither an associated family history of PC nor of diseases known to be associated with an increased risk of PC. These groups of patients who comprise the bulk of PC cases are termed as "sporadic PC" in contrast to the familial PC cases that comprise only… Show more

“…Furthermore the incidence of breast cancer has been steadily increasing over the past few decades [2] necessitating development of greater preventative strategies. It is well established that increased consumption of fruits and vegetables is associated with a reduced risk of most cancers [3]. The beneficial effect is partly due to the fact that fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants, fiber, and other potentially antineoplastic compounds.…”

“…Pancreatic cancer is one of most lethal malignancies, has one of the poorest prognoses, and is the 4th leading cause of tumor-associated mortality worldwide (Michaud, 2004;Chakraborty et al, 2011). According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, although pancreatic cancer accounts for only 2% of all new cancers each year, its incidence is nearly equal to its mortality rate, and the 5-year survival rate of 4-5% is the lowest among all cancers (Jemal et al, 2006;Koorstra et al, 2008).…”

“…This discrepancy may be attributable to differences in patient selection. Their patients were in different stages of the disease and undergoing distinct therapies, in contrast to the homogeneity of our patient population, allowing us to avoid bias from the influence of stage or treatment on the gene expression [29].…”
