“…This is a great advantage, especially compared to those approaches that require complex glass-processing machines to fabricate sensing structures. Similar structures, with a sensing fiber spliced between two single-mode fibers, have been used in previous works [1,7,8,[12][13][14][15][16][17] showing that this approach is indeed suitable for various sensing applications, while exhibiting simplicity and easy manufacturing. The fabrication of the device only requires the use of a standard fusion splicing machine.…”

“…Recently, several new fabrication methods for short abrupt tapers have been proposed and demonstrated in experiments. For example, a high-frequency pulsed CO2 laser with a maximum average output power of 10 W was employed to modify the fiber structure by applying a constant tension to the ends of the fiber [28]; in [29], a compact abrupt taper MI was manufactured by fusion splicing the fiber taper with two normal cleaved fiber ends; a more straightforward method was proposed in [30], where the abrupt taper was made by directly fusion splicing two normal cleaved fiber ends. These methods provide more access to the abrupt taper manufacturing and bring multiple configurations to the abrupt taper structure.…”

“…A segment of SMF could transmit the fundamental mode in the core, but it can be seen as a section of multimode fiber (MMF) taking into account of the cladding modes. In spite of the good experimental results achieved by means of the multimode modal interference [5][6][7], it is necessary to find the possibility to improve the bending sensitivity for the engineering applications.…”

“…Based on two cascading abrupt-tapers modal interferometer in a single mode fiber, a high curvature sensitivity of À 13.176 nm/m À 1 was achieved within the in the measurement ranges of 4.8-6.38 m À 1 . Unfortunately, the manufacturing process needs the CO 2 laser which is expensive for general economic conditions [6]. To date, the optical fiber sensors based on multimode interference (MMI) are paid close attention and many kinds of MMI sensor configurations have been proposed, such as core mismatch structure [4,5], s-tapered fiber [7], waist-enlarged tapers [8,9], peanut-shape structure [10], core-offset splicing [4] or the combination of these structures.…”
