“…In their 1972 study Brasfield and Das Gupta" found six cases (5.4%) of melanoma in 110 patients with neurofibromatosis, three of which developed within large congenital nevi. Other authors have presented single cases, including an anorectal melanoma16, 20,29,33,40,44. The association of NF-l with uveal melanoma, reported by numerous authors, is better known 2 ,5,12,13,21,37,38,45,47,48,52.54 . In these patients the melanoma seems to have arisen within preexisting uveal nevi-".…”

“…A possible explanation for this higher Breslow thickness might be a delay in diagnosis because of the difficulty of identifying the malignant melanoma amongst the various skin lesions and hyperpigmentations seen in NF1. In a number of cases the cutaneous melanoma developed in giant congenital nevi (Brasfield & Das Gupta, 1972; Hope & Mulvihill, 1981), café‐au‐lait spots (Perkinson, 1957), sunburned skin, nevus spilus (Rütten & Goos, 1990) or in skin overlying a neurofibroma (Silverman et al., 1988).…”

“…They reported a 64‐year‐old man with hundreds of cutaneous and subcutaneous neurofibromas covering the trunk and extremities. A melanoma was discovered above a polypoid lesion not previously marked as a café‐au‐lait spot 11 . In addition, only one case, reported by Perkinson, described a melanoma arising in a café‐au‐lait spot of neurofibromatosis after a severe sunburn 12 .…”
