Cyanobacteria Associated withAnopheles albimanus(Diptera: Culicidae) Larval Habitats in Southern Mexico

Abstract: Cyanobacteria associated with Anopheles albimanus Wiedemann larval habitats from southern Chiapas, Mexico, were isolated and identified from water samples and larval midguts using selective medium BG-11. Larval breeding sites were classified according to their hydrology and dominant vegetation. Cyanobacteria isolated in water samples were recorded and analyzed according to hydrological and vegetation habitat breeding types, and mosquito larval abundance. In total, 19 cyanobacteria species were isolated from wa… Show more

“…Detailed community composition and relative abundance at levels of phylum, family and genus are presented in Figure 3 and Table S2, S3, and S4. In the larval and pupal stages, photosynthetic Cyanobacteria were prominently abundant, representing ∼40% of the communities, consistent with previous reports [16], [17]. During the transition from pupa to adult, gut community structure changed drastically.…”

“…For example, it occurs in recently planted rice fields, or in older fields with sunlit areas in between the rice plants [77] (Table 4). Anopheles albimanus has been associated with floating mats of blue-green algae [76,78,79], which are often found in sunlit waters. The larvae of this ubiquitous species tolerate a wide variation in water chemistry and are able to exploit diverse food sources [78], enabling them to survive in both fresh water ( e.g .…”

“…The microbes themselves and catabolism of leaf detritus produce volatile and nonvolatile metabolites that mediate the oviposition behavior of gravid mosquitoes [31]. Bacterial biomass [29, 37] and species composition [38, 53] have been suggested to be important environmental determinants of the occurrence and abundance of mosquitoes.…”
