Cyclaneusma gen. nov., Naemacyclus and Lasiostictis, a nomenclatural problem resolved

Abstract: The correct binomial for the type species of Naemacyclus is N. fimbriatus comb. nov. Lasiostictis fimbriata is a synonym. The common pine needlecast fungi hitherto called N. niveus and N. minor are not congeneric with this species and are therefore redisposed in Gyclaneusma gen. nov. (Rhytismataceae) as C. niveum and C. minus combs, nov. Gyclaneusma minus is illustrated and the taxonomic position of the new genus is discussed.U. S.

“…The genus Cyclaneusma was erected by Dicosmo et al. () to accommodate Naemacyclus minor and N. niveus, which have ascospores and hymenium with quite different characteristics to the type species of that genus; they also renamed the type species from Naemacyclus pinastri to N. fimbriatus . Two different species, Cyclaneusma minus and Cyclaneusma niveum are recognized in Cyclaneusma (Dicosmo et al.…”

“…Ascospores filiform, hyaline, smooth, 2-septate, with mucous caps at both ends, 65-100 X 2,5-3 iLm in size. Conidia are bacilliform, 6-9,5 x 1 iLm in size (Di Cosmo, Peredo and Minter, 1983;Millar and Minter, 1980). Importance: This fungus causes considerable damage to pines grown for Christmas trees in Eastern U.S.A. and also to some degree in Australia and New Zealand (Millar and Minter, 1980).…”
